In lieu of going over an otherwise finished song and messing with its' stereo properties in the post-production phase, I might suggest using not only more panning of elements, but panning more drastically that which you have already panned.
Granted, I would still advise that you use it mostly on single fx channels, but using it extremely lightly on a track has given me good results in the past. The effect I believe you are looking for is stereo expansion, which more or less widens what you feed it and Melda Audio makes a really good free stereo expansion vst that I get a lot of good use out of.
